I. Introduction
The Tochigi Cancer Center has entered into a cooperative agreement with Nagasaki University for a joint graduate program. Under this agreement, students admitted to the doctoral program will conduct cancer research at the Tochigi Cancer Center Research Institute under the guidance of experts in the field. Specifically, they will engage in translational research aimed at clinical applications, gaining experience in conducting research and compiling their findings into academic papers. In the final year of the doctoral program, students will submit their thesis and earn their degree from Nagasaki University.
II. Philosophy and Objectives of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (Doctoral Program & Doctoral Course)
Nagasaki University has the longest history of Western medical education in Japan. Over the years, it has produced numerous researchers and professionals, significantly contributing to the advancement of medical sciences in the country. To further enhance the interdisciplinarity and advancement of graduate education and research, the university has integrated its former Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences to establish the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
The objectives of this graduate school are as follows:
- To cultivate diverse biomedical scientists with scientific originality and global perspectives.
- To conduct cutting-edge research on specific biomedical science topics that align with the university’s strengths and to develop professionals who can contribute as key figures in their respective fields at both national and international levels.
- To foster highly specialized healthcare professionals equipped with both scientific knowledge and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in society.
III. Goals of the Doctoral Course
The primary educational goals are:
- To enable students to conduct independent research in the medical sciences.
- To equip students with the academic knowledge necessary to understand the nature and pathology of diseases through a scientific and logical approach.
IV. Program Features
- Degree Awarded: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dentistry, or Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
- Support for Remote Students: Distance learning options, including e-learning, are available.
- Acceptance of Working Professionals: The program is open to working professionals pursuing graduate studies.
- Academic Support:
- Both general and working graduate students can apply for various internal awards and the Nagasaki University Special Research Fellowship.
- General doctoral students (excluding working professionals) may apply for a Research Assistant position in their fourth year.

Doctoral Program – Medical Sciences Major, Comprehensive Oncology Course
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Graduated or expected to graduate from a university program in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy (6-year curriculum), or Veterinary Medicine.
- Hold a master's degree or are expected to obtain one.
- Have been deemed to have academic ability equivalent to or higher than (1) or (2) through individual admission screening
(e.g., individuals with a bachelor's degree who have at least two years of research experience at a university or research institution and have published research papers).

For October 2023 Admission (Second Half of the Academic Year)
- Eligibility Screening (for applicable candidates): Until June 2, 2023 (Friday) at 5:00 PM
- Application Period: June 19-23, 2023 (by 5:00 PM, must arrive by the deadline)
- For April 2024 Admission (First Half of the Academic Year)
- Eligibility Screening & Application Period: November–December 2023
